A lot, apparently. This half-term, as well as animating, creating prosthetic limbs and green screen apparitions, we’ll be making as many sound effects as we can using a humble, bulbous pumpkin, this is what our team at Kensington Prep School Film Studio came up with last year:
PUMPKIN FOLEY DESIGN
Hollow Taps / Tap on a hollow pumpkin with your fingers or a stick. Depending on the thickness of the pumpkin and where you tap, you’ll get different pitched "knocking" or "bong" sounds.
Scraping / Use a spoon, your fingernails, or a stick to scrape the surface of the pumpkin. This can create a scratchy or scraping sound.
Drumming / If you carve a pumpkin and remove the top, you can drum on the opening or sides with sticks to create deeper sounds, like a drum.
Rubbing / Rub the outside of the pumpkin with different materials (e.g., cloth, rubber) to create different friction-based noises.
Seeds Shaker / Leave some pumpkin seeds inside and shake the whole pumpkin like a rattle. The seeds moving around will make a soft rattling or shaking noise.
String Sounds / If you attach strings or rubber bands around the pumpkin and pluck them, it will create twangy sounds, similar to a guitar or a harp.
Squishing / If you use an old, soft pumpkin and press it, squish or smash it, it will make a squelching or squishy sound, perfect for when you’re stuck in a swamp.
Places are still available to book for this Halloween/half-term, more info here.
