Welcome back to the best academic year we’ve ever had. After a blistering 23/24 with over 40 films made by more than 600 students, awards and national expansion, we welcome 24/25 and look forward to adding even more to our offer. We already have spectacular new educators, amazing new schools, more Studios to get involved with during the school holidays and new opportunities for our students to make huge differences to their community, their school and themselves through filmmaking.
But before we start to move forward we’re celebrating with a little look back at last term’s films at The Town House in Kingston this Saturday. This event is being hosted by our partners The Kingston International Film Festival and PHASE Worldwide and stats at 10am. Tickets are still available here.
This Autumn term sees our Academies join with local, national and international charities. Our students will pitch the reasons why films should be made about the causes they’ve been given to champion. Once it is decided which charity the Academy will be working with, via a public vote, we will be engaging with senior leadership from that organisation and hearing directly from them. It’s a fantastic opportunity to make a tangible difference for others through filmmaking whilst having lots and lots of fun.
We will also be starting our accreditation programme. The first UK Film Accreditation for U18’s. The programme is being endorsed by the British Film Institute (BFI) and will be made available exclusively to Ciné School and BFI Academy students; with a push to make it available to all next year. Once the young filmmaker has achieved your ‘Level 1: Understanding Filmmaking’ certification (which usually takes up to three terms) they will be presented with their certificate at The BFI Southbank in June next year and we will hold an Academy place for them for the following year so they can get stuck in to Level 2.
With that we welcome older students for the first time from Coombe Boys and Coombe Sixth Form. It’s wonderful to be able to welcome Key Stage 3, 4 and sixth form students into Film Academy and can’t eat to see what they create over the coming weeks. This will mark the start of a new secondary and sixth form roll-out which will gather pace over the next few years.
As more councils and institutions get to know us, many exciting new screening venues are being made possible for 24/25. The Kingston International Film Festival (KIFF) will be supporting us to have an even bigger presence in 2025 as it aims to widen its celebration of young filmmakers both here and overseas.
PHASE Worldwide continues to support our commitment to give everyone the opportunity to create. After a fully funded week of filmmaking in Rotherham with our friends at Rotherham College, alongside our amazing Ambassador and Oscar winner Tarn Willers, PHASE are continuing their pledge to empower those who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend Film Academies or Studios in 2024.
